Transforming the Wortham Theater Lobby with Color-Changing LED Lighting
Houston, TX
The new LED lights consume a fraction of the power, and will last much longer, minimizing the maintenance needed. The new floods are also color-changing—so the mood of the lobby can be transformed to match the performance.
Challenge
- The old lights used a lot of electricity (10,200 watts) and generated a lot of heat.
- The halogen bulbs frequently burned out, and maintenance required lift access.
Solution
- Voss redesigned the ceiling lighting with more precise optics.
- Voss performed a mock-up to ensure satisfactory results prior to ordering.
- Voss supplied, installed, and programmed the new DMX lighting system.
Key Results
- New LED lighting system generates minimal heat and uses just 1,800 watts.
- The LED fixtures virtually eliminate regular maintenance costs.
The RGBW solution adds dynamic color to the ceiling—so the mood of the lobby can be transformed to match each performance. A traditional symphony or ballet can be accompanied with elegant white light on the ceiling, but the venue can transform the ceiling with bold colors for an exciting jazz performance or musical. The new lights were programmed to be compatible with the existing DMX control system on site, for maximum convenience.
